Transcript

Here are three balance exercises. Do them next to a wall or a chair without wheels, so you can hold on. Clear the floor first. Stop if it hurts, or if you feel dizzy or unwell.

First, the one-leg stand. Stand facing a wall. Touch it with your fingertips. Lift one foot a little off the floor. Keep your hips level. To make it easier, keep both hands on the wall and lift only your heel. Hold for five seconds. (pause) Put your foot down gently. Change legs. (pause) Do three on each side. (long pause)

Next, the heel-to-toe walk. Stand next to the wall. Touch it with your fingertips. Put one heel on the floor just in front of the toes of your other foot. To make it easier, leave a small gap between your heel and your toes. Now bring your back foot to the front in the same way. Look ahead, not down. (pause) Take five steps. (pause)

Last, side steps. Stand next to a wall or counter. Put your feet together and bend your knees a little. Slowly step one foot out to the side. Bring your other foot to meet it. Do not cross your feet. Keep your hips level. To make it easier, take small steps and hold a counter or the back of a chair. (pause) Take ten steps one way, then ten steps back. (pause)

Well done. Always stay close to the wall or a chair when you practise balance.
